Is Graphic Design Art?

Is graphic design art? This is such a good question, because the lines between graphic design and art are very blurry. Commercial designs are often highly creative, even beautiful; and so much art is based on popular culture and mass media. But there are distinct differences in the purpose of each.
Graphic design, unlike many types of art, isn’t solely about self-expression. It has to be functional. So while it has aesthetic appeal and may scratch that creative itch the designer feels, it’s all about conveying a message and usually involves problem-solving. For instance, crafting a logo that visually communicates the values of a company while also being scalable and legible at very small and very large sizes can be very challenging. I’m working on a logo this week that’s making me do some mental gymnastics!
Part of what makes art so appealing is that it can have multiple interpretations depending on the viewer. But we don’t want that to happen with graphic design. Typography, color theory, and layout are important tools to make sure that our communication is understood as precisely and universally as possible.
Both art and design play an important role in shaping our understanding of the world, but they take different routes on the journey.
